Just as public and private school teachers plan their curriculum for the year, as a homeschool parent it is equally important for you to take time plan the subjects you cover in the homeschool classroom. A specific homeschool curriculum plan will not only guarantee that you are a prepared to teach, but that your children get the best education possible–which is probably why you started homeschooling in the first place.
Public school teachers require resources to their classroom, and so will you. Along with books and learning resources, you will also need plenty of worksheets and instructional printouts to not only capture the classroom atmosphere, but to stimulate learning in your child. Approaching homeschooling from the notion that you must follow the same formats and rules public school teachers use in their classrooms could make your experience as a homeschool parent harder than it needs to be. That frustration will translate to your child and could severely affect their education and reception to the material you’re trying to teach them.
Unfortunately, the materials you need to provide a quality homeschool education for your kids can be really expensive. The good news is, homeschool communities both in your local region and online take a certain amount of pride in the fact that they are responsible for their kids’ education. They not only want to assist other parents on the journey, but they happen to know some of the best places both online and offline to find homeschool worksheets, lesson plans and other quality resources for homeschool curriculum.
One of the downsides with online resources is some people charge, and you think because it costs money it must be quality stuff. Not all paid resources are quality. On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are dozens of free homeschool materials online, like printable homeschool worksheets, projects and lesson plans. Taking advantage of resources like the ones offered on Printable Homeschool and Homeschool Views can not only save you money, but has the potential to connect you with other homeschool parents looking to share their knowledge and experience with you.
The great thing about free printables is you can draw from several different resources on the same subject material to provide your child with more practice and a broader view on the material. You can never practice mathematics enough, but using the same worksheets over and over again is not going to help your child do much beyond memorizing the answers. Learning the material and studying the worksheets and printables yourself may also inspire you to get creative. Crafting your own resources for use at home involves you in the learning experience as well, keeping the material you are teaching your children fresh in your mind so you can make sure they’re getting it right.
There are also different approaches to homeschooling, from classical and relaxed style to online and faith-based educational styles. For parents who specialize in incorporating their family’s personal faith into their homeschool curriculum, there are numerous online resources. For example, Christian parents can swap materials, resources, printables and ideas on a site like Christian & Homeschool Resource Center, while Muslim families can take advantage of the resources offered on the Muslim Homeschooling Resource site. Faith-based printables, texts and projects help you incorporate your families values and the lessons you find imperative to your lifestyle into your child’s everyday learning experiences.
No matter what your own personal preference and style as a homeschool parent tends to be, awareness about different styles of teaching, as well as the resources that are out there will enhance your educational curriculum and experience. Spend time learning about the different styles, drawing from the plethora of available online resources out there for homeschool families. As the famous saying goes, “The more you read, the more you know,” and your own personal passion for learning will translate to your children, igniting a spark and hunger for knowledge inside them too.
Covering all the bases as a homeschool parent can be tough. You need to provide your child with knowledge and applications, yes, but you also need to incorporate projects that cover material they would learn in classes like art, music even physical education. Sharing homeschool curriculum ideas and information with other parents in your area is a great way to partner up for socialization, field trips and other activities. We all know socialization is an important part of every child’s daily life, and reaching out to other families with children on the homeschool path, even if their path and curriculum differ than yours, will not only help them make friends and meet their social needs, but it can provide you as a parent with extra ideas and resources you may not have considered before.

I think it is great to be able to find websites that help preschoolers or whatever the child age may be in education. It helps them to do better in their learning abilities.
